Astoria was trying to not think. It was one of those days where she couldn't stop, though; there was just too much in her head. It was Sunday morning, and she'd been out with Graham the day before. What she didn't know was if it counted as a date; or rather, if he wanted it to. Moreover, she didn't know what to do about him, in general. She'd not heard from her parents, which meant they were still thinking about his proposal as a suitor, and so she knew there was no need to think about it... but she couldn't stop.
He didn't really want her. He wanted a wife with a brain, sure, and someone he felt comfortable with, but he didn't want her. He was fond of her, that was all it was, a fondness. Like he would be fond of a friend; that was why he hadn't taken the opportunity presented to him, to sleep with her. If he wanted her - wanted her like she wanted him, she had come to realize - then he would have taken the opportunity even if reluctantly. Instead, he had turned her down as politely as one could, and he had carried on as if nothing had happened. Maybe all those things she had thought about him were wrong; maybe those looks weren't what she had thought they were, maybe they were just looks - maybe disdain instead of desire, she didn't know!
She wasn't sure what to make of all of it, and so Astoria had gone to the one place she felt comfortable in search of a distraction. She couldn't find one, though, instead just sitting in the library over analyzing everything that had happened, even though she had a book open in front of her.

Transfigurations homework could be very tedious even for someone like Kevin. As he roamed through the stacks, plucking select books from the shelves and piling them in his arms he was also looking for a suitable place to sit. The library being uncommonly full that day, however, it wasn't the easiest of tasks. Nearer to the back was when Kevin spotted an empty table, with the exception of one person sitting at it.
Astoria, he knew her, but also knew that she didn't much like him. This minor thing didn't influence his decision to sit with her in the least. Loads of people didn't like him and that never stopped Kevin from doing anything. "I'm sure you do mind but every where else is full." He informed her taking a seat on the other side and putting his pile of books in two stacks. Also, Kevin sat his bag on the ground pulling out everything else he would need.

She didn't like Kevin. He was too smart and too cynical and that really bothered her. But then, a distraction was a distraction. "I don't mind" She assured, then, in another moment, added, "What are you doing?"

He didn't believe her but didn't shun her politness either. "Transfiguration, McGonagall has me doing a biography on the man that created Veriverto."

How she wished she had such a distraction. "How's it going?" She asked slowly, sliding her chair closer.

"I've gotten a name, Quintius Slanisky." And that was about it, unfortunately.

"I'm not a transfigurations buff" Astoria admitted, "But if you're looking to avoid your studies, I offer a game of chess - muggle, because it's quieter." She said quietly, since she wanted to think of something other than what she currently had on her mind.

Kevin didn't really want to do the Transfiguration work but it still needed done. "I suppose one game would be alright."

She hadn't expected him to agree - she wouldn't have if he asked her. Still, she dug into her bag and pulled out her travel size muggle chess set, smiling at him as she expertly enlarged it. "Thanks" She said quickly, "I know you're busy and all, but I just.. uh... really need a distraction, you know?" She asked, though she had a feeling he wouldn't. He was too logical for all this.

"No," Kevin answered bluntly helping set the pieces up. "I don't. What do you need a distraction from?"

"As teenage and cliche as it sounds, boy problems." Astoria answered, shrugging one shoulder. Even he must have had girl problems, right?

"A waste of time." Kevin stated taking a black and a white pawn off the board and mixed them up under the table. With closed fists, one in each hand, he offered it to Astoria so she pick a hand and reveal who was to go first.

Astoria chose his right hand, "You mean to tell me you've never been hung up on a girl?"

Opening his hand to see the white pawn he replaced both on the board turning the white side to first for Astoria to go first. "No, I haven't. Emotions are chemical imbalances in the brain, jolts of energy that make you believe something to be true. The only real thing is pleasure, those endorphins that you get from the false feeling of love is masked pleasure, you can find it in someone else just as easily."

Logic. As she made her first move, a pawn, Astoria pondered Kevin's words. "Not love, but rather loyalty, is the concern. As well as desire" She explained.
