"Loyalty has little to do with either of those but rather a person's general integrity." Kevin advanced his own pawn.

"Desire is a matter of integrity?" Astoria asked, cocking an eyebrow.

"No, loyalty." Kevin repeated wearily. "Desire is part of the pleasure."

"The concern is that there is no desire - beyond friendship" Astoria explained, "The loyalty and everything else come after that."

"Do you mean to say," Kevin advanced his rook. "That you would want a boy to act like every other buffoon at this school and charm you into bed before you were ready, and if that isn't what you mean then I assume that you made the first move to prove this theory of yours that desire is platonic in this boys case, toward you?"

"The latter" Astoria informed, "Though I'm not sure if it was him trying to be respectful or if he is legitimately uninterested." She explained as she moved her knight.

"Objectively speaking, Astoria, you are a beautiful girl. Attraction is not something that you need be concerned about. So I doubt that your friends isn't interested." Kevin glanced up from the chess board for the first time since they'd started in favor of looking at Astoria. Yes, she was attractive.

"Thank you," Astoria answered immediately, as was polite, "But I think that his ability to appreciate beauty is different than feeling attraction, wouldn't you agree? It's the difference between appreciating and wanting" She tried again. He was being very logical, as she had come to expect, but her concerns weren't exactly chess pieces to be moved around in a logical pattern.

"Perhaps," Kevin checked. "But you have no evidence pointing to a platonic attraction other than suspicion. Just the same he could be respectable. Has he treated you with respect in every other aspect?"

So much for distractions, "He has" Astoria admitted, "But his reputation speaks to his love of... well, sex" She explained, moving her knight again, to take the piece that he was checking with.

"Then maybe you should stop worrying about things and attempt for a desirable outcome. If you want this boy in that way then, respectable or not, you should make it painfully obvious to him." Kevin's suggestion might have been blunt but it didn't make it any less true. "He could very well be an idiot."

She wasn't exactly the type to do that, but she supposed she could try. It would just take a little... borrowing... from her sister's closet. But did she want to force him to want her? "He could," She agreed, remembering Graham's desire to remain publicly stupid. She moved her rook next, straight into check.

"It's settled then." Kevin declared. To him it was at least.

Astoria didn't think so. The question was now whether she wanted to go to those lengths for someone - anyone - when she could find someone who liked her for her. "I suppose so," She nodded, moving once more. "Check mate."

Kevin laid down his King nodding in approval. "Not bad Astoria. It has been a long time since I've been bested in a game of chess."
