It was a curious thing, this lone gargoyle in the corridor. For six years Elle hadn't paid all that much attention to it, not the fact that it was so out of place, and certainly hadn't taken notice of the way it's unseeing eyes seemed to follow you where ever you moved. As she stood in front of the gargoyle, studying it's unfriendly features, Elle slowly moved to the left observing that the stone pupils remained fixated on where she went.

"Funny thing, isn't it?" Ernie asked, coming up to Eleanor and folding his arms once he stood beside her. He himself just was just going to have a spot of lunch, on his way down from Divination. It was a funny class, if anyone bothered to ask him (of course no one did), but it was still wicked interesting. In truth, he never really noticed the gargoyle before, but he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to talk to a fellow Housemate.

If not for that unsettling feeling the gargoyle gave her causing hyper awareness, Elle might have been startled by Ernie. Pivoting to the right, her gaze fixated on the statue, she nodded. "It is. The eyes follow you where ever you go like some kind of predator just waiting for that perfect moment to pounce." Taking a small step back Eleanor turned to her new companion, having to force herself to look away from the gargoyle. "Hi Ernie." Elle offered a bubbly smile.

"Hello, Eleanor," Ernie said brightly, offering her a smile before returning to scrutinize the gargoyle. "It really is a funny thing. Perhaps it's actually alive, and is just biding its time until it can pounce?" he asked, though knew that was highly unlikely. Still, even he could joke, couldn't he?

She had lost count in the number of times she had told Ernie to call her Elle, but kept her mouth shut on the subject in favor of the gargoyle. Eyes wide, Elle moved over next to Ernie. "The armour moves of their own accord, or so I've heard, so it's possible." She gave his arm a light smack, laughing softly and smiling. "Jeeze Ernie, way to freak me out."

"It's unlikely," Ernie said, glancing down at her for just a second, then back at the gargoyle. "I mean, if it were to eat someone, it would have done it already. And I doubt gargoyles eat students." He followed that statement with a hearty chuckle at the mere idea of the statue eating somebody. It was just preposterous.

Elle couldn't help but laugh too. If there had been students gobbled up by the gargoyle there would have been news, or at least rumor, of disappearances. "Creepy as it is, aren't gargoyles supposed to be guardians? So if that's true then it should be good, or at least protecting something."

"Ah, yes. But what could it be protecting?" Ernie puzzled, his face scrunching as tried figuring it out. Of course there was always the possibility of it being just for decoration, but then again, there could have been something it was guarding, either now or in the past.

Elle raised her shoulder in a dramatic shrug. "Don't know." There were supposed to be hidden passages and the like all around the castle but Elle had never found any, at least that she realized. "Maybe it's protecting a secret room or something."

"Maybe we should try finding it," Ernie suggested, looking over at her with a grin. He wouldn't mind trying to discover a secret passage or room behind a gargoyle. Of course, he was planning on doing some homework after lunch, but this was always a nice turn of events.

"Excellent idea!" Elle exclaimed ready to just jump right into finding if there was more than met the eye about the statue. But there was pause in her actions. "How though?" Feeling up the gargoyle for some kind of switch might look a little odd.

"Well," Ernie said thoughtfully, tapping his chin, "we could try a password. Or try talking to it. Or we could see if there's something we need to touch or press..." The idea of it looking odd talking to or feeling a statue didn't occur to him, not when there could be a secret passage to find.

Elle giggled. With the amount of words in the English language to choose from she wasn't sure where to begin. Maybe tossing out random words might work. Clearing her throat and forcing on a serious expression, although it was mockingly, Elle turned to the gargoyle. "Excuse me sir, but might you be willing to tell us the way to get to whatever it is you're guarding?" Ernie had suggested that they try talking to it. Seconds passed and all Elle got was the stony gaze.

Ernie watched Eleanor as she tried talking to the gargoyle, then shook his head when there were no results. "Maybe you need to sound more serious," he suggested with a small shrug. The gargoyles outside Dumbledore's office were able to talk and move for a password, so why couldn't this one?

"Okay." Elle smoothed out her uniform and ran a hand to fluff up her hair a bit, as though that would help her be more serious about the whole thing. Maybe starting with something simpler, just to get the gargoyle talking would be better. "Hello?"
