Ernie liked to wake up early. It was just who he is, because really, who wanted to sleep in when so much could be done with the morning? He'd been doing this every day since his first year, and it never came as a surprise to him that there weren't many students in the Great Hall as he sat down. It was only seven on that Saturday morning, so there were only the few regular early birds sitting at their respective tables. Ernie offered all of them bright smiled as he piled eggs onto his plate, and, like he expected, none of them returned the gesture.

Rose had taken the stairs from the basement two at a time, having had a very restful sleep, and a fun so far morning. She'd gotten up early to see the sunrise, as she tried to do at least once a month, and so the bounce in her step was even more pronounced; after all, the beauty of nature brightened any day. She wasn't surprised to see Ernie MacMillan in the Great Hall when she arrived, and sat down directly across from him, grin plastered on her pretty face. Her hair, it's standard bright pink, was all tied back, and she was truly happy as she greeted him with a bright 'Good Morning.'

Ernie's bright smile only grew as Rose sat down across from him. Finally! A cheerful face in the annoying crowd of slumped shoulders and tired faces. "Hello, Rose," he said. She came early once a month, and he had to say he loved it. "How was the sunrise this morning? I saw it through the windows a little earlier, but I wasn't able to actually stop and watch it."

"Lovely as always," Rose answered, pouring herself a mug of tea from the pot closest, charmed to stay warm and perfectly steeped, before looking around for some toast. "I especially like summer sunrises, but autumn isn't bad. How has your morning been so far?"

"Just wonderful," Ernie beamed. "I managed to finish my Potions essay and take out a few books for Charms, and got in some extra morning rounds." And by 'morning rounds,' he meant taking a stroll of the castle, because there was hardly anyone up at the same time he was - not on a Saturday.

"You're mad getting up at this time every day, you know" Rose smiled fondly. "How long have you been up?" She asked as she found her toast, layering it lightly with a strawberry jam.

"An hour," Ernie said proudly, shoveling more eggs into his mouth and conveniently not hearing her mention of him being mad. "What time did you get up?" He looked around the table for a moment before spotting the coffee and pouring himself a mug of it. One of the good things about early breakfast, he came to realize, was that there was always an ample amount of food to choose from.

"That's a lot to accomplish in an hour" Rose said, jealous of his work ethic, though her brown eyes shone, impressed. "I've been up around the same amount. Must have just missed you in the common room."

"Must have," Ernie said cheerfully, blowing on his coffee before taking a cautious sip of it. "There was only some kid sleeping on the couch when I came downstairs."

"I saw him too! Woke him up to see if he wanted to come along to watch the sunrise... he wasn't impressed." Rose grinned, looking up and down to see if he was around - he wasn't. "He must have gone back to bed."

"Poor bloke," Ernie said with a solemn shake of his head. "You don't pass up the opportunity to watch the sunrise if it's given right to you!" Although, if the boy passed out on the couch, then he could only assume that he wasn't in bed for very long when he was woken up.

"You have the opportunity almost every day and you never do it!" Rose accused, though playfully, just before taking a bite of her toast.

"Yeah, well, I'm usually out doing something," Ernie defended. Her tone was light, and though his wasn't quite as playful, it didn't sound as if he took it completely to heart. "He was just sleeping." Such a waste of time!

"Well not everyone's as perfect as you Ernie" Rose pointed out with a grin, "Some of us like to sleep!" She was of that variety, which was why she only say the sunrise once a month rather than every day.

"Pfft," Ernie scoffed with a wave of his hand. "Sleep is overrated. Think of how much more you could get done if everyone got up earlier! Maybe they could go to bed earlier, but how much gets done at 2 o'clock in the morning anyway, when you're already tired?"
