Chris stared at the sheet of paper she held in her hands, re-reading the words she had spent a whole hour agonizing over. Okay, maybe words would be misleading. More like word. Singular. That word was NO, penned very neatly in her signature emerald ink. She was not going to marry anybody at the moment, pureblood traditions be damned, and she certainly wasn't going to marry someone she didn't know and had never even met. "Idiots" She muttered, feeling a tiny little bubble of hurt come up to the surface. Forcing it back down she tied the letter to the borrowed owl's leg. She would not put it past her father to kill her own much loved bird simply for being the bearer of displeasing news. Clenching her fists at her sides she watched as it took off before taking a step backwards and bumping straight into someone. "Damn" She sighed and closed her eyes for a second, getting her emotions in check before turning to face them.

Draco, the person she had bumped into, was stood with a pile of letters in hand, waiting for an apology, eyebrows raised. After all, she had just walked into him without much care at all! Him, Draco Malfoy! What did she think, she was the queen of England?

Looking up into the face of Malfoy junior, Chris fought the impulse to hex him to kingdom come. If she couldn't get back at her parents then he was a pretty good second. Her logical side tried to reason with her, told her that she didn't know a thing about him, not really. It didn't do much good. Sighing she raised an eyebrow, mimicking him. "Its really not a good idea to stand directly behind people you know" She said softly. "Still, Please accept my apologies for bumping into you. No bruises I hope?" The last sarcastic remark slipped out quite unbidden.

He vaguely recognized her; but not enough to actually remember her name. "I happened to be walking by when you stepped backwards. Poor timing on my part" though he wouldn't apologize. "Apologies accepted, sarcasm refused." He added, pursing his lips. "You've no need to be rude."

"Oh good Gracious" Chris rolled her eyes "Was I?" It suddenly occurred to her that Malfoy had his own owl, A beautiful bird that Chris was quite fond of, despite not knowing it's name. She frowned, realizing that this was probably a sign that she was spending far too much time in the owlery and post office. "Is your owl alright? I didn't notice it at breakfast." There was a touch of true concern in her voice and she realized that she probably sounded more than a little insane. Still, It was only Malfoy, and she hadn't said anything that would be reported back to her parents, so she didn't particularly care.

Draco nodded, "She's fine. I sent her out this morning with a letter for my mother, she's not back yet." He explained, though he wasn't sure why. Random, that she would notice something like that. Was she watching him or something?

Chris gave him a genuine smile "I'm glad. She's quite an amazing bird." She looked off into the distance for a second "What's her name if you don't mind me asking? I've been wondering and none of the possibilities I come up with quite seem to fit" Realizing what she had just said she gave a laugh. "Well, so much for convincing people that I'm sane." She noticed the expression on his face "Don't worry, I don't watch what you do or anything. I just like your Owl. She's always struck me as rather intelligent" Malfoy Jr's polite reply to her concern for his pet had reduced her desire to hex him significantly.

"Ebony" Draco responded, as he wasn't sure what really do about this conversation. She was sort of creeping him out, really. She definitely was watching him.

"Lovely. I'm sure she'll appreciate being addressed by her name" Chris nodded, more to herself than to him. "Well, please don't let me hold you up Malory" She turned her back on him and stood at the wooden counter, removing her quill from her pocket so as to write another quick note, this one a plea to her cousin for more information. She was really quite proud that she had managed a civil conversation with the boy whom she regularly referred to as the ferret. She had been privileged enough to be present during that particular incident back in fourth year. She couldn't remember ever laughing so hard. The mere thought brought a slight smirk to her face and she bit her lip in an attempt not to show it.

Draco still had no idea who she was, but it bothered him little, and he handed off his stack of invitations to the post clerk, with brief instructions. He was having a part of sorts over the break - or his parents were - and had been required to sign all of the invitations personally. Without another word to the strange, creepy girl, he turned and left, still wondering who she was.

Chris signed her note and handed it over to be tied to an owl. Seeing that Malfoy had left she smiled. Perhaps he thought she was crazy. All the better for her really. She was wary of Malfoy, he conducted himself like a perfect death-eater in training and that meant that it was probably better to have as little contact with him as possible. He was also, she knew, Head Boy, which made him doubly dangerous. Amused by the fact that her talk of Owl had apparently completely confused him she headed out into the sunshine with a smile on her face and a spring in her step that wouldn't normally have been there, considering her before now, pretty terrible day.
